The Obeshimi Tengu
A powerful theatrical mask representing one of Noh's most dramatic character types — the Obeshimi, or "big clenched mouth." A supernatural being whose immense spiritual force stays sealed behind tightly pressed lips.
Symbolism & Character
The Obeshimi belongs to the kishin, or demon-deity, category of Noh masks. It's used to portray tengu, mountain spirits, and other beings with overwhelming supernatural power.
The defining feature is the mouth, clamped shut with visible tension. It shows a being holding back immense energy, magic, or rage instead of releasing it.
Bulging eyes, often gilded, and a fierce brow add to the sense of contained power.
In performance, this mask appears in plays like Kurama Tengu. It embodies the legendary tengu who trained the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune in swordsmanship on Mount Kurama.
