Japanese Kibatobide Mask
The kiba-tobide (牙飛出) is one of the rarest masks in the Noh theatre tradition, a fierce-god mask distinguished by its dramatically protruding eyes and exposed fangs.
Belonging to the kishin (鬼神) category, the oldest class of Noh masks, it represents a deity whose power is directed outward: mouth open, gaze blazing, fangs bared.
In performances it is associated with the Nue, Japan's most famous chimeric monster, a creature of monkey head, tiger limbs and serpent tail, whose story has been told since the Heike Monogatari of the 12th century. .
