Traditional Japanese Basara Mask
Basara (伐折羅大将) is one of the 12 Heavenly Generals who protect and serve Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha).
In traditional Japanese sculpture and art, they are always grouped in a protective circle around Yakushi Nyorai. It is said that they represent the twelve healing vows of the medicine buddha, which include, "By my limitless insight and means, may I enable all beings to obtain the necessities of life."
Others say the 12 Generals were with Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha) when he presented the “Healing Sutra;” Some others say the number 12 correlates to protection during the 12 daylight hours or that they symbolize the 12 months of the year, or the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac.
