Hyottoko Mask Meaning

Hyottoko, known as the Fire Boy, is a fascinating figure in Japanese folklore. The story begins with a boy who struggles to find success in various jobs until he is given the task of keeping the communal fire going by blowing the flames. 

Hyotokko, meaning Fire Boy, reflects this duty. According to legend, his face distorted and blackened from constantly blowing the fire.
