Traditional Wooden Japanese Buaku Mask

Buaku Mask (武悪面), a distinctive Kyogen mask representing Buaku, one of the most recognizable demon-type characters in the Kyogen comic theater tradition funny looking oni whose exaggerated expression carries as much mischief as menace.

Buaku takes his name from the Kyogen play in which he appears as a servant sent by his master to kill an old family retainer, only for the plot to unravel through trickery and reversal, a classic Kyogen structure of authority undercut by cunning. 

Though carved with the fierce, oni-like features typical of demon masks, bulging eyes, a scowling brow, and a wide, tense mouth, the character sits closer to Kyogen's comic register than Noh's tragic one. Buaku masks are used for minor oni and demon-servant roles across the Kyogen repertoire, making them a recognizable "type" rather than a single character.
