Red Oni Mask (赤鬼面)

A traditional Japanese mask depicting the aka-oni, or red demon. One of the most recognizable figures in Japanese folklore, mythology, and festival tradition.

Symbolism & Character

Red oni are ogre-like beings tied to raw physical power and unfiltered emotion. Anger, greed, desire. In folk belief, the red color stands for these negative passions, while blue oni represent the pull toward taming or transforming them.

Oni show up throughout Japanese mythology as fearsome antagonists. In some regional traditions they're protective or purifying spirits instead. The clearest example is Setsubun, where people chant "Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi" (demons out, fortune in) while throwing beans to drive them away.

The mask's features do the storytelling. Bulging eyes. Sharp fangs. A furrowed brow. Horns, often. All built to project menace. This is the core of oni-men, used across Noh, Kagura, and festival performance.

Please note that all the masks listed are old and have been used by Japanese people. This gives the items various weathering and imperfections. They are not perfect. You can see the quality of the items in the photos.
